Here we are. A small correction from yesterday’s post: We’re not actually in downtown Charleston, but on Daniel Island. Sure, it’s not far off, but accuracy matters. Apologies for the mix-up.

We wake up and head down to breakfast. The boys immediately spot the waffle irons. The decision is simple – it’s waffles for breakfast every day.

The car situation is still unresolved in this city that is designed more for cars than pedestrians. But we’re determined. A quick Google search for nearby playgrounds leads us to explore Governor’s Park and downtown Daniel Island. It might seem like an ambitious plan for newcomers, but with our hotel just minutes away, it’s no big deal.

After finding a playground nearby, the jet lag is suddenly a distant memory.

We wander through the nearby woods and it doesn’t take long before we stumble upon our first exotic discovery. A bright red cardinal bird catches our attention and makes us stop in our tracks. “Wow!”

The temperature is already over 25 degrees celsius (77 degrees fahrenheit), and we realize we’ve definitely left the cold Swedish winters behind. We stroll through the tropical nature, admiring the environment that surrounds us.

As we continue our walk, we notice small yellow signs appearing on the trees. We move closer to take a look and discover that they warn of alligators. While we knew these creatures inhabited the area, it suddenly becomes more real when standing before these signs, reminding us we’re not in Sweden anymore. It’s worth noting that both Jasmine and I had visited Charleston a few weeks earlier to prepare for our move, but having the kids with us makes everything a bit more exciting. After seeing a jogger turn back from the trail, we realize it’s wise to do the same.

We head into town with the target set on refueling. We settle down at Domino’s and experience the charm of American cuisine – garlic and cheese baked into the crust, delicious!

We continue our walk and notice people photographing something interesting along the edge of a pond. We hurry over and discover an alligator relaxing in the sun. The kids are fascinated and immediately want to take pictures and film. It’s nice that someone’s taking responsibility for documenting our journey.

It’s been an eventful first day, to say the least.
